Brazilian Rosewood

Scientific Name: Dalbergia Nigra

Brazilian rosewood is one of the most highly prized woods in Brazil. The timber has been harvested since colonial times for high-quality furniture and musical instruments. Also known as the Bahia Rosewood, Rio Rosewood, Rio Palisander, Jacarandá De Brasil, Pianowood, Caviuna, or Obuina (Dalbergia nigra) is a species of legume in the Fabaceae family. The term “Brazilian Rosewood” has been misused often recently. It should only be referred to as “Dalbergia nigra.” However, due to extreme rarity, high value and limited availability of legally permitted or certified lumber, many businesses often misrepresent other similar species as “Brazilian” rosewood.  Living trees can be found only in Brazil, from the eastern forests of Bahia to Rio de Janeiro. It is threatened by habitat loss, since most of its habitat has been converted to farmland. Due to its endangered status, it is CITES-listed, and logging of living trees is illegal and strictly enforced.

As with other kinds of rosewood, this timber is very hard and dense. It is used for flooring, and for building furniture, wands and musical instruments. It is also used for wood turning such as wooden chess sets, bowls, platters, candlesticks, etc.

CITES permitted Brazilian Rosewood

MADEIRA is passionate about our genuine and legal Brazilian Rosewood. We are dedicating our efforts, time and investments to bring premium, salvaged and vintage Brazilian Rosewood (Dalbergia Nigra) to be reborn as beautiful premium guitars.  All of our Brazilian Rosewood is properly validated and permitted by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).

MADEIRA is a new and small company, however, MADEIRA has been the largest supplier of legal Brazilian Rosewood in the world for the past two years. The majority of legal Brazilian Rosewood has been sold to major guitar manufacturers and luthiers through our business channels.

MADEIRA is committed to the preservation of Brazilian Rosewood: we only sell legally permitted and certified genuine Brazilian Rosewood from recycled building materials, salvaged lumber which could have been discarded, burned or simply thrown away.  We also have conducted numerous and stringent tests and inspections, including a voluntary Radiocarbon dating test to ensure that our materials are derived from pre-convention, salvaged, vintage specimens.

We sell CITES certified/approved salvaged Brazilian Rosewood. Most of our Brazilian Rosewood are sold to wholesale reserved to our existing luthier clients and guitar manufactures. However, we reserve and make small amount of our Brazilian Rosewood stock available for general public sale.

New shipment of Brazilian Rosewood Acoustic Guitar sets are available for sale soon.
